Comment Spam Protection

I added the WordPress plugin that requires one to enter a Sum of two simple numbers in order to add a comment. I know this is dumb, but I have seen several sites that use that to deter spam comments (of which I have started getting at least 5 per day that I have to moderate). It would be pretty easy for someone to write a bot that could circumvent this, so I am just going to see how it goes.

If it doesn’t work, I’ll remove it and try to find a plugin that with heuristically mark spam comments as spam without my intervention. If that too fails, I’ll probably just suck it up until it gets bad enough I have to implement a captcha, but I hate captchas so I hope that we don’t get to that point!

Update: I believe I have also turned off pingbacks by default. I started immediately getting spam from them once I added the captcha and pingbacks aren’t that cool anyway. I mean, if someone links to my blog post, I’ll see it in my google analytics if people are actually following that link.
