This Weekend

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

It has been a pretty good weekend thus far. Yesterday, we painted the baby’s room. The color is called moss green, but it looks a bit more like a forest green on the wall. It was a lot of hard work and we came within razor thin margins of running out of paint (especially today when we were doing touch-ups), but we got it mostly done.

We also bought blinds for the two bedrooms upstairs. I am a bit worried about one because they don’t make non-custom blinds in the right size for the window. We ended up with one that was about 3″ shorter than it really ought to be. Hopefully it will not look tacky. If so, we might have to return it and get custom for that.

I spent the entire morning cleaning, especially upstairs. My granddad and cousin Megan came to visit today for the first time and see our house. It was really cool having them up to see us. We did not do too much. We showed them the house, talked for a while, and then ordered a pizza from Dominos. Megan took advantage of some time with a computer (she is staying at my granddad’s without internet at the moment) and got me to give her a copy of Thirteen which is apparently one of her favorite movies (it is really good).

After that, I met Lori’s mom at Chili’s to get the electric screwdriver to put in the blinds, and we did the aforementioned touch-ups on the paint. Then I ran out to get the correct sized Blind for one window (the one that is going to use the smaller size than it is) and hit up CVS for some deals and freebies before coming on home.

Unfortunately, it is 10:38 now and I have not gotten to the blinds. I think I’m going to get some sleep for church and tackle that project tomorrow instead.

Lyrics

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

I was thinking that it might do some good
If we robbed the cynics and took all their food
That way what they believe will have taken place
And we can give it to people who have some faith

Food for Thought

Friday, May 9th, 2008

I don’t want to get into any lengthy debate on this issue, but I know a lot of people are up in arms thinking that Ethanol production is causing the price of food to rise. While that may be partially true, you do have to also consider the fact that a big part of the cost of food rising comes from the fact that oil has reached record levels, and, though you may not always think about it, much of the food in the grocery store comes from far away and expends an enormous amount of food getting to you.

Thus, while I remain cautious on whether ethanol is an appropriate solution to our petroleum dependency, I think that whenever someone wants to complain about it, they should also remember the high prices being imposed by OPEC.

Also, you should consider buying locally grown food. It should not be as price inflated by gas costs of either kind.

Real ID

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

I have to say that I am very pleased that I live in a State that did not kowtow to the Federal Government on Real ID. I am proud of the South Carolina legislature and Gov. Sanford for not seeking an extension on compliance. Expectedly, the government granted one anyway. I assume that if the states will continue to stand up against the program, it will never be implemented. I pledge for all of those with decision-making power on the subject to remember the 10th Amendment to our Constitution.

Question of the Day

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Is there really a housing crisis? I think that the media is making a really big deal about it though I am sure, no doubt, that there are more people than usual getting foreclosed upon, but really, a CRISIS?

1. a stage in a sequence of events at which the trend of all future events, esp. for better or for worse, is determined; turning point.
2. a condition of instability or danger, as in social, economic, political, or international affairs, leading to a decisive change.
3. a dramatic emotional or circumstantial upheaval in a person’s life.

I am sure it fits definition 3 for the affected individuals, but in that case you could call ANY foreclosure a housing crisis. We’ll have to see if the problems are at a turning poing or lead to decisive change. I still suspect the media is blowing it out of proportion. Anyone have an opinion?

Pumped-Storage

I learned about Pumped-Storage yesterday. This is probably lame, but I think it is really a neat way of getting around the problem of storing power for future use.

Thought of the Day

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

I was just thinking about encryption and I bet ROT-13 is sufficient to keep your personal data from at least 80% of people. I think this would be worth exploring though as when thinking about it more, I bet it might be as much as 99% of people. Of course, if it were important, then whoever discovered the data would tell the other 80-99% of people, but I am just talking about raw decrypting power of the average person.
